Blueberry Toast Ingredients
Like most toast recipes, this blueberry toast is prepared with luscious blueberries compote, cream cheese/greek yogurt, and some other ingredients to pep up the overall taste, nutrition, and flavor.
-
Bread - I have used whole grain and seeds bread slices for making blueberry toasts. They are fiber-rich and nourishing. You can also use crusty or rustic loaf, artisan bread or any other bread you have handy.
-
Blueberries - I have used fresh blueberries for making compote. You can also use frozen blueberries here. A combination of frozen blueberries would also work here. The textures would be slightly different with both types of berries, but the taste would be the same.
-
Creamy spread - I slathered toasted bread slices with cream cheese spread. You can also use mascarpone cheese, full cream/nonfat Greek yogurt, crème fraîche, and whipped ricotta cheese as a spread. You can also use any of your favorite spreadable cheese.
-
Lemon Juice - It is added to strawberries to make the compote. I have used fresh lemon juice, but you can also use bottled lemon juice.
-
Lemon Zest - It not only pairs elegantly well with blueberries but also adds a nice zesty punch to the blueberry toast. Adding lemon zest is entirely optional though. So if you don’t like zest flavors, you can absolutely skip it.
-
Olive oil - It is used in compote and also used for toasting bread slices. Adding olive oil or butter makes compote shiny and enhances the flavor of compote. You can also replace olive oil with butter.
-
Honey - Honey is used as a sweetener for homemade blueberry compote. You can also use sweeteners such as maple syrup. Granulated or raw sugar can also be used here.
-
Chia seeds – I sprinkled some chia seeds over toast for a nice crunchy touch and added antioxidants and goodness.
How to Make Blueberry Toast
Making blueberry toast takes only 10 minutes from start to finish. This is how it is made in just 4 steps:
Step 1 – Add blueberry, honey, and lemon juice, lemon zest and olive oil to a saucepan. Let it come to a boil over medium heat. Turn the heat to low, and simmer until berries are softened. Lightly keep mashing the berries to release their juice while stirring often.
Once done, remove it from the heat and set the mixture aside.
Step 2 – Toast your bread slices using a toaster. Alternatively, toast the bread in a pan with olive oil or butter. Just make sure that toast is crunchy and strong enough to hold the juicy toppings.
Step 3 – Let the toasted bread cool completely on a wire rack. Spread the toast with cream cheese or Greek yogurt.
Step 4 – Top with blueberry compote, sprinkle with lemon zest and chia seeds. Drizzle with honey & enjoy!

Tips, Tricks, Variations & Substitutes
-
Honey - If you prefer sweeter toast, you can also drizzle each toast with honey for added sweetness right before serving.
-
Herbs - You can also sprinkle toast with fresh herbs like mint, basil, rosemary, or thyme.
-
Spices - You can dust toast with powdered cinnamon.
-
Lemon zest - Adding lemon zest adds such a nice flavor to the blueberry toast recipe. However, adding lemon zest is entirely optional here.
-
Jam - If you don’t have time to make the compote, then you can also make the same toast using blueberry jam or fresh blueberries. This would make a delicious blueberry jam toast.
-
Blueberries - You can make the same toast by using other berries such as blackberries, raspberries, or strawberries.
Variations & Substitutes
Want a variety of blueberry toast? Then you can surely try these variations:
-
Fruit - You can add other berries to the compote to make a mixed berry compote.
-
Gluten-Free Toast - To make this toast gluten-free, swap whole grain bread with the gluten-free bread of your choice.
-
Seeds & nuts - I topped the toasts with chia seeds. For extra crunch, you can also use other toppings such as slices of almonds, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin, or flax seeds.
-
Vegan/Dairy-Free Toasts - For a vegan version, swap cream cheese with a vegan spread. And also, swap honey with vegan sweetener alternatives such as maple syrup or agave nectar. Sugar can also be used here.
-
I am using low-fat cream cheese here, but you can also use full fat cream cheese.

Blueberry Toast (Step-by-step photo instructions)
Make Blueberry Compote
- Heat 1 cup of blueberries, honey/sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon of olive oil or water in a small saucepan over medium heat and stir well to combine.
- Bring to a boil, and then turn the heat to medium-low. Simmer it until blueberries start to burst. Keep stirring and slightly mashing the blueberries to release their juices. Once they are bubbly, syrupy, and slightly thickened, remove the compote from the heat and transfer it a bowl. Set it aside to cool.
Toast bread
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot, spray/drizzle olive oil, or spread butter on a skillet. Place bread slices on it, and drizzle the top with more olive oil. Toast the bread slices from both sides until they are crunchy, crisp, and golden brown. The toast should be sturdy enough to hold the toppings. Transfer the toasted bread slices to a cooling rack and let them cool completely before adding toppings. This step would prevent toasted bread slices from turning soggy. Alternatively, you can also toast the bread slices in the toaster to your preferred level.
Assemble Toast
- To assemble toasts, spread about 2 tablespoons of softened cream cheese on each slice of bread. Top each piece with 1-2 tablespoons blueberry compote. Sprinkle with lemon zest, and chia seeds and serve immediately.
