Fresh Strawberries are peeking from groceries: Strawberry picking season is not here yet, but there are plenty of fresh strawberries in all grocery stores now. I just love this time of the year when groceries are so full of fresh Strawberries. What do you do when you see fresh strawberries? Do you buy them instantly or glare at them for a while and then buy the most beautiful ones, like me?
My love for puff pastry: I may have written this many times, but I want to say it one more time — I LOVE anything puff pastry. I would be so surprised if someone would say that they don’t have the puff pastry dough in stock. My reality is a little different! If you open my freezer you’ll always find puff pastry sheets lying there. It will look at you with so much love, as if it wants to say, “come on, take me out please, I am so cold here, heat me up please!” 😉 And I do what pastry sheet tells me to do! I heat them up almost every time they say this to me! 😉

Beware of little ones: A strawberry cream cheese filling wrapped in puff pastry with appealing slits allowing its sweet center to peak through. Isn’t it the perfect way to pack the fresh strawberries? Once you set it in the oven, you will start smelling the sweet scent of puff pastry and strawberries baking. Your kitchen air will be filled with this sweet awesome baking aroma. Beware of the classic baking aroma — because that would arouse the little ones in your house, and they will keep following you till they get their (more than FAIR) share of this braid! This happens with me all the time! 🙂
This is all about your favourites: I used the puff pastry as a base. This time, I used store bought frozen puff pastry sheet, but you can also use homemade puff pastry. Both work great so use whichever you prefer. And also for filling sometimes I use cream cheese and sometimes quark cheese, I like both the versions so feel free to use any of your favorite cheese. This time I decided to use my favorite filling for ingredients – cream cheese and strawberry jam. I combined them together. Doesn’t it sound like the best thing ever? It tastes even better than it looks, and that’s making a statement.
How to do it: Store-bought puff pastry gets smeared with cream cheese + strawberry jam mixture, and topped with sliced strawberries. Then I free-handed the cuts and folded into the braided pattern. Brushed with egg wash and sprinkled with some pearl sugar. Then baked in the oven. A beautiful, delicious and surprisingly quick and easy braid was ready for serving.
Result is mind-boggling: Do I even need to tell that the outcome was heavenly? Mmmm, flaky, buttery puff pastry combined with cream cheese and smooth sweet, slightly tangy, tartness of the strawberries. Now you see, someone was very lucky last morning when I made this for the breakfast. 😉
Serve it as a breakfast/brunch alongside some coffee. It’s sure gonna be a hit at your home too.
Follow these super easy instructions and create this flaky, buttery Braided Strawberry Cream Cheese Pastry at home to please your loved ones! 🙂
- cream cheese or quark cheese, at room temperature - 120g
- strawberry jam - 2 tbsp
- Frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed - 250g
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
- Fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced - 12-14
- Pearl sugar, for garnish
- egg wash - 1
- Preheat the oven to 400°F/200°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, combine cream cheese and strawberry jam. Mix until well combined.
- Roll the pastry into a 14-by-12-inch rectangle.
- Transfer the pastry dough into the prepared baking sheet. Cut diagonal slits 1 inch apart from the 2 sides of the pastry rectangle.
- Spread the cream cheese mixture lengthwise down the center of the pastry.
- Top with fresh strawberries.
- Add some more mixture and strawberries.
- Fold the top and bottom parts of sheet as shown in video.
- To braid; Start at one end and fold the pastry strips over the strawberries on a diagonal, alternating sides until the whole sheet is braided.
- Brush the pastry with the egg wash. Sprinkle with the pearl sugar and top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool on completely on wire rack before serving.
- Enjoy with a cup of coffee.
