RECIPE INGREDIENTS
» For Flaxseed Paratha
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (atta)
- 4 tablespoons ground flaxseed
- 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan salt
- 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon warm water (or as needed)
- For Rolling and Frying:
- Oil for folding and roasting
RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS
» Prepare the Dough
- In a stand mixer, add the whole wheat flour, ground flaxseed, salt, and warm water or milk.
- Mix and knead until you get a soft and smooth dough. You can also knead the dough by hand if you prefer.
- Let the dough rest for 15-20 minutes. This helps make the parathas soft and easy to roll.
- After resting, divide the dough into equal portions. Each ball should be slightly smaller than a golf ball.
» Triangle Paratha Rolling Technique
- Take one dough ball and dust it lightly with dry flour. Roll it into a 4-inch circle.
- Drizzle or brush about 1 teaspoon of ghee on top and sprinkle some dry flour.
- Fold the circle in half to form a semi-circle. Brush one side of the semi-circle with ghee again and sprinkle a little flour.
- Fold it once more to form a triangle.
- Dust the triangle with flour and gently roll it out to 4-5 inches, keeping it about 1/8 inch thick. Parathas are usually rolled a bit thicker than rotis to give that nice, hearty texture.
» How to Cook the Flaxseed Parathas
- Heat a tava or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, lower the heat to medium. Place the rolled triangle paratha on the tava.
- When small bubbles appear, flip it. Brush this side with ghee or oil and cook until golden brown.
- Flip again and cook the other side until crispy and evenly browned.
» Serving
- Your flaxseed parathas are ready to enjoy. Serve them hot with yogurt, pickle, or any curry you love. They also pair well with a simple cup of chai for a comforting meal.
RECIPE NOTES
- I used a stand mixer for kneading the dough, but you can also knead the dough using your hands.
- Make sure to roll evenly for uniform cooking. I have made triangle paratha, but you can also roll them into circle paratha, square paratha, or even lachha paratha.
- I used oil to keep it fully vegan and plant-based. You can also use ghee or butter for cooking these parathas.
